Mickey's Toontown opened on the northern end of Disneyland on January 24, 1993 as the park's eighth official land. It was inspired by the 1988 Touchstone motion-picture, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," and resembles a set from a classic 1930's cartoon, with colorful balloon-like buildings that tilt and lean,with a cartoon styled appearance.

Disney Imagineers like to say that Mickey's Toontown has always existed on the boarder of Disneyland, but it was not until 1993 that Mickey decided to finally allow park visitors to enter his colorful cartoon home for the first time. To enter the land, Toontown visitors must cross beneath a trestle bridge and beyond the berm of the Disneyland Railroad.

3 - Toontown Ragtime Medley - Chris Calabrese 01:57

Talented ragtimer Chris Calabrese released a special album dedicated to the music of the Disney parks in 1998 called, "Ragtime at the Magic Kingdoms." This album features many of the original songs written for Disney attractions, but also contains musical salutes to several themed lands, including a special tribute to Mickey's Toontown.

4 - Welcome to Toontown - Parade Swing 03:04

This original theme song was composed for the grand opening of Mickey's Toontown, which was part of the opening day ceremonies and thereafter became a featured song during Toontown's various daily good morning ceremonies. In 2014, the "toon" was included on the Japanese, Disney Parks techno music tribute album, "Parade Swing."

5 - Roger Rabbit Comes to Disneyland - TV Ad 00:31

The 1988 Touchstone motion-picture blockbuster "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was still in theaters when Roger Rabbit first appeared in Disneyland. During the holiday season he was featured in the Very Merry Christmas Parade, and was the star of an all new stage show at Videopolis. He soon became a favorite meet and greet character among guests.

Toontown was not only a tribute to Disney's all-time greatest movie hero, Mickey Mouse, but it was also home to the newest Disney star, Roger Rabbit. When the land was nearing its grand opening date, a television ad campaign was launched to generate buzz and excitement around the fact that you could now meet Roger Rabbit in his own hometown.

7 - Toontown Ground Breaking 01:40

In November of 1991, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the future entrance to Mickey's Toontown. President of Disneyland operations, Jack Lindquist, was joined at the lectern by Mickey Mouse. After a few remarks they lowered a TNT plunger, setting off an explosion of confetti as Roger Rabbit and Benny the Cab crashed onto the stage.

A special perk once offered exclusively through The Walt Disney Travel Company was known as "Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness." One hour before Disneyland opened to the general public, the Mayor of Toontown and Mickey Mouse held a special ceremony at Toontown City Hall where all present were made honorary citizens of Toontown.

9 - Waking Up in Mickey's Toontown - Rose Parade 04:20

On New Year's Day 1993, Disneyland staged a special opening number for the 103rd annual Tournament of Roses Parade. The 1993 tournament theme was "Entertainment on Parade." Mickey, Roger and the whole Disney gang performed a salute to Mickey's Toontown, which would officially open in Disneyland just twenty-three days later.

10 - Mickey's Toontown - TV Ad 00:32

For the 1993 opening of Mickey's Toontown, this enticing television ad was broadcast in all western U.S. markets. A jolly cartoon sunburst performed an upbeat musical number, inviting audiences to visit the all-new cartoon home of the Disney gang, suggesting that this is now the most madcap, wacky and lively of all the themed lands in Disneyland.

11 - Toontown Grand Opening 01:50

For the first time in over twenty years, a new land opened in Disneyland on January 24th 1993. A who's who of the Hollywood elite attended the special grand opening ceremony. Comedian Harry Anderson was invited to preside over the proceedings, declaring that all those present were now honorary citizens of the all-new Mickey's Toontown.

Mickey is mighty glad to see ya, and welcomes you to his cartoon hometown. Toontown's nonsensical tilting, turning, balloon-like architecture is inspired by the stylized imagery often found in the classic cartoons produced during the Golden Age of animation, and as seen in the 1988 love letter to hand-drawn entertainment, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

13 - Craig and Co - Toontown Concert 40:11

Craig and Company was a children's rock band featuring singer/songwriter and music producer Craig Taubman. In 1993 he released an album entitled, "Rock n' Toontown," inspired by Disneyland's new themed land. He was invited to perform the songs from this album during a live concert at Mickey's Toontown, which aired on the Disney Channel.

14 - A Day at the Happiest Place on Earth - Toontown Montage 02:16

In the 1990's, this souvenir VHS was sold throughout the park, offering a video diary of a typical day at Disneyland. A second edition, released in 1993, included a newly inserted Mickey's Toontown segment. It focused on many of the hidden details of the new land, and provided an overview of the homes of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Chip n' Dale.

Mickey welcomes us to visit his neighborhood and describes many of the fun things there are to see and do here.Toontown is actually divided into two sections. On the eastern end is the downtown district. On the western end is a charming little community where guests find many of the familiar residential homes of their favorite Disney animated friends.

During the months following the opening of Toontown, a street show was performed daily in the downtown area featuring Roger Rabbit, a quartet of singing citizens and other favorite characters. A young guest was chosen from the onlookers to defuse the evil Judge Doom's "dip charge" and save the day. They were then rewarded a key to the city.

17 - Toontown Railroad Station 01:53

Mickey's Toontown depot is technically located in Fantasyland, next to the Fantasyland Theatre, and a few steps around the bend from the Toontown entrance. This station stop was first added to the Disneyland Railroad in 1985, with the opening of Videopolis, but was redesigned for Toontown as a more traditional looking station, with a cartoon twist.

Approaching Mickey's Toontown, as a beckon call to come join the fun of this wacky world, one hears a compilation of dozens upon dozens of classic cartoon sounds effects. These assorted boings, splats, gurgles, crash-bang-ka-booms and other bizarre noises are the inventive work of Disney's legendary sound effect wizard, Jimmy MacDonald.

The delightful, and often zany music that can be heard all around Mickey's Toontown includes a collection of fully orchestrated instrumentals, faithfully adapted from the original musical arrangements that were composed for many of Walt Disney's early Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony short-subject cartoons of the 1930's and 1940's.

NEW 20 - Mickey and Friends - Cartoon Soundtracks 40:07

All the songs heard in Mickey's Toontown originate from the classic Walt Disney shorts produced during the golden age of animation. Heard here are all the original recordings from the Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck shorts that inspired the tunes of Toontown, from "Steamboat Willie" in 1928, to Goofy's "How To" shorts of the 1950's.

The Silly Symphonies, a groundbreaking musical series of animated shorts produced by Walt Disney from 1929 through 1938, are well represented in the area music of Mickey's Toontown, as well as a few memorable songs from Walt Disney's package films of the 1940's. 22 - W.A.C.K.Y. Radio Broadcast 21:13

Throughout Toontown, guests may encounter a number of old-time radio sets, each tuned into local station W.A.C.K.Y. This seemingly live broadcast includes a series of comical public service announcements, catchy commercial jingles, weather reports and news updates, all laced with a non-stop stream of ridiculous puns and zany one-liners.

23 - Toontown Sax Quartet 10:37

During the early days of Toontown, the pre-recorded cartoon area music would often be interrupted by performances by live bands, including a sax quartet imported from Main Street USA. When they performed in Toontown, they dropped their normal turn of the 20th century look, instead donning bright colors, bow ties and wacky argyle socks.

24 - Songs to Animate Your Inner Toon By 1:32:29

There are many familiar tunes that are now closely affiliated with the golden era of cartoon shorts of the 1930's and '40's. The three major animation studios of Warner Brothers, MGM and Walt Disney Productions often incorporated preexisting classical and popular music in their shorts to further enhance the wacky world of animation.

- Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin -

This dark ride wack-stravaganza is based on the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." The fun begins in the queue, as guests weave their way through the seedy back alleyways of Toontown. Behind the wheel of a run-away cartoon cab, guests follow the hare-raising adventures of Roger Rabbit. After his tires hit some "dip" in the road, the taxi spins passengers wildly out of control crashing them through the Acme Gag Warehouse.

- Downtown Toontown -

Interactive gags can be found throughout Downtown Toontown. At the post office, PO boxes speak in the voices of the characters that get their mail there, and a mailbox out front shouts out such remarks as, "Well don't just stand there, mail something!" There are talking manhole covers, electric doorknobs, and at the nearby fireworks factory, a conspicuously located TNT plunger sets off a series of silly sounding explosions.

- Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway -

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is the first ride-through Disney dark ride type attraction based on the main mouse. It is inspired by the stylized characters from the new series of Mickey shorts that first began production in 2013. This trackless dark ride premiered in March of 2020 in Walt Disney World, and in early 2003 opened at the all-new El Capatoon theater now located in Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland.

For over a decade, the delightful Jolly Trolley provided one-way transportation between Downtown Toontown and Mickey's Neighborhood. These bouncy key wound cars were retired in 2003, due to an ever increasing amount of pedestrian traffic in Toontown, but one can still climb aboard one of the retired vehicles for an unusual photo opportunity.

58 - ACME Gag Warehouse 00:52

There are two large gift shops located in the downtown district of Toontown. The Toontown Five and Dime is to Toontown as the Main Street Emporium is to Main Street. It is connected to the ACME Gag Warehouse, making it one of the largest souvenir locations in Disneyland. Here one can purchase all manor of Disney collectables.

59 - The Laugh -O-Meter 00:23

Inside the Acme Gag Warehouse, the central motif is a strange mechanical contraption called the Laugh-O-Meter. Moving in and out of the machine are a line of white cartoon gloved robotic hands, entering empty handed and coming out the opposite end holding various gag items such as banana peels, rubber chickens and whoopee cushions.

60 - ACME Talking Crates 02:02

A fun feature at the ACME Gag Warehouse are its stockpile of shipping crates. These contain such unusual cargo as rib-ticklers, rip-snorters, slap-sticks, wisecracks, shattering glass, springs, cow moos and train whistles. As curious guests lift the lids to peak inside these comical crates, each omits a series of wacky sound effects.

61 - Toontown City Hall - Clockenspiel 02:39

In Toontown's town square visitors can meet and greet their favorite Disney friends and pose for photos. When the characters are about to arrive, just like clockwork the colorful clockenspiel high above Toontown City Hall springs into life. Mallets ring bells, gloved cartoon hands pull steam whistles, firecrackers sound and confetti pops out of cannons.

Toontown Square is centrally located in the heart of Mickey's Toontown. Here guests can step up to the counter at Daisy's Diner, Clarabell's Yogurt Shop or Pluto's Doghouse for a tasty toon snack, and relax in the City Hall courtyard beside a colorful gazebo where favorite Disney friends make special surprise guest appearances throughout the day.

The Disney characters have been meeting and greeting with Disneyland guests since opening day in 1955. Over time they have evolved, as the cast has grown in numbers. These huggable friends represent that special sort of magic that sets the Disney parks apart from the rest, allowing youngsters to meet their favorite animated pals in person.

Toontown Square is the best place to grab a bite in Mickey's Toontown. This outdoor food court, brimming with colorful umbrella covered tables, includes three counter service options. Daisy's Diner is owned and operated by the web-footed gal pal of everyone's favorite Duck. The limited menu includes pizza by the slice and assorted desserts.

65 - A Musical Salute to Daisy Duck 09:11

Here is a musical tribute to a favorite Disney friend. Daisy made her screen debut in the 1940 Donald Duck short, "Mr. Duck Steps Out." Although she is an endearing character who is beloved by many, unlike Mickey's female cohort, Ms. Duck is vain, materialistic and headstrong, making her a formidable companion to the temperamental Donald.

66 - Clarabelle's Yogurt Shop 02:47

Clarabelle Cow's first screen appearance was in the classic 1928 Mickey Mouse short, "Steamboat Willie." Today she is the proprietress of a dairy desert stand in Toontown. Aside from a steady supply of milk, the "moo" plate specials include utterly delicious sweet treats such as soft serve frozen yogurt, novelty bars and ice cream sandwiches.

67 - Pluto's Dog House 03:41

If you are ever wandering through Mickey's Toontown, and suddenly have a hankering for a hot dog, Pluto's Doghouse has you covered. The namesake of everyone's favorite four-legged Disney pal, this establishment offers fresh franks of both the beef and turkey variety, as well as turkey sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and assorted deserts.

- Goofy About Toontown -

That lovable goof is the proprietor of a full service filling station located in the heart of Toontown, Here the motto is always, "service with a smile." After a toon-up, including a full tank of laughing gas, you can visit Goofy's residence located right across the street. For several years, this was an elaborate bounce house exclusively for the tiny tykes. Today it is accessible to all visitors and includes interactive gags for kids of all ages.

Permanently anchored in Toon Lake is the ship-shape houseboat home of Donald Duck, the S.S. Daisy. This slightly less than seaworthy vessel is an interactive playground for younger guests, containing various hands-on bells and whistles. As they explore the ship, guests may hear Donald and his mischievous nephews engaging in a comical dialogue.

One of Disney's most enduring and beloved cartoon creations of all time is one Donald Fauntleroy Duck. He was launched into immediate stardom when he made his screen debut in the 1934 Silly Symphony short, "The Wise Little Hen," and is the only duck to ever receive an Academy Award. Here is a musical salute to our fine feathered friend.

76 - Gadget's Go Coaster 00:56

Toontown's colorful kiddie coaster is based on the character Gadget Hackwrench from the Disney animated series "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers." The mechanically minded mouse, known for her cleaver inventions using discarded household objects, assembled this wacky contraption using an erector set, tinker toys and assorted building blocks.

77 - Chip 'n Dale Acorn Crawl 00:56

A staple amusement at both pizza parlors and arcades throughout the 80's and 90's were their ever popular ball pits. When Toontown first opened it contained a ball pit as well. Located next to Chip and Dale's Treehouse, it was themed to resemble their stockpile of gathered acorns. It closed permanently in 1998 due to ongoing hygiene concerns.

78 - Disney Character Training - Chip 'n Dale 06:04

Chip n' Dale first appeared at Disneyland on opening day in 1955. In they late 50's they became permanent park ambassadors and have since been among the most popular meet and greet characters in the Disney parks worldwide. You can tell them apart because Chip has a brown nose like a chocolate chip, and Dale has a red nose and bucked teeth.

Although the adjacent acorn crawl is long forgotten, Chip n' Dale's Treehouse remains a predominant landmark of Mickey's Toontown. This lovable duo made their first screen appearance in the 1943 animated short, "Private Pluto." and continue to charm Disney fans to this day. Here is a special musical tribute to these nutty little troublemakers.

- Minnie Mouse's House -

The welcome mat is always out in front of Minnie Mouse's adorable pink bungalow. As guests walk-through this charming little dwelling they can relax in her cozy living room, then see what's cookin' in her kitchen, which is filled with silly interactive appliances, a refrigerator stocked with cheese and several clanging pots and pans. Exiting her home, guests can visit her wishing well and wander among her manicured backyard gardens.

Within the familiar neighborhood of Mickey and his cartoon pals is a centrally located water fountain containing a statue of the world's most famous mouse conducting an orchestra of cartoon musical instruments. Embedded in the surrounding sidewalk are several metal plates that, when stepped on, sound off a series of comical horn noises.

It's always open house at Mickey's cozy cottage, and his home is filled wall-to-wall with many of the creature comforts befitting a simple guy with simple tastes. The trophy case in the main foyer contains numerous awards and memorabilia from his legendary nine decades in show business. Resonating from a player piano are Mickey Mouse favorites, and the TV in the living-room is always tuned into a classic Mickey Mouse cartoon.

After a self guided tour the main mouse's Toontown residence, guests enter a backyard garden encountering a movie barn where they can greet Mickey up close and personal on the set of a classic cartoon, including "Steamboat Willie," "The Band Concert," "Thru the Mirror" or "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Mickey is always happy to sign his autograph or pose for a photo or two, but the little ones simply prefer a big Mickey hug.

Shortly after the grand opening of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, an all new, "reimagined," Toontown debuted on March 19th 2023. Old favorites were revitalized, such as Goofy's House and Donald's Boat, and additional green spaces and interactive play areas were added to the land. At the center of it all was the new Centoonial fountain.
